Marie McCartyExecutive DirectorA Homer resident since 1996, Marie has a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic in Maine, a Juris Doctor, and a Masters of Studies of Law degree from Vermont Law School. Before moving to Alaska with her family she was a practicing attorney in New Hampshire, focusing on healthcare while working for New Hampshire Legal Assistance, and completed an internship with the Conservation Law Foundation while completing her Masters degree. Marie joined KHLT’s staff in 1997 and worked as the Development Director before becoming Executive Director in June 2008. She is a member of the Homer Rotary Club, is an avid ice hockey mom and team member, and can be spotted around town being tugged along by her malamute, Orca. |

Mandy BernardConservation DirectorMandy joined the staff of KHLT in February 2011. Her background includes serving as a city planner in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and being selected for a Colorado Conservation Trust Fellowship in Granby, Colorado. She has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, and a earned a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning with a focus on the connection between local comprehensive plans, land use planning, and conservation easements. Mandy researches and evaluates potential land protection projects, participates in easement negotiations, creates baseline documentation and management plans for properties protected by KHLT, and manages KHLT’s land stewardship activities. She is an avid baker and enjoys cooking, homebrewing, and coffee roasting almost as much as she loves playing in the snow with her husband and two big dogs. |
anne cainDevelopment CoordinatorFirst appearing on the Alaska scene in 1964, Anne attended Homer High School when her parents moved her to Alaska from Texas as a teenager. She developed an intense love of Alaska, and has returned numerous times throughout the years. Finally looking to make this a permanent home, Anne is building her “Alaska log cabin” at the top of East Hill Road. Anne has Bachelor of Arts in English/History from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and also majored in Secondary Education (a social sciences composite) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). After an “early, voluntary” retirement as Technical Editor/Writer with UT’s College of Engineering in 2005, she moved to Alaska to work publications contracts with Anchorage engineering firms (three Native Corporations, Crowley Maritime, and CH2M Hill), as well as Nuka Research and Planning Group (out of Seldovia) on the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation's Risk Assessment Project. Anne has two sons, a grandson, and three well-traveled pets (two dogs and a cat). She loves tennis, college football (Texas Longhorns), travel, history, and fundraising for her favorite non-profit organizations. |

Rick clineAccounting/Grant ManagerBefore finding Alaska Rick earned his Bachelor of Arts in Finance at the University of Santa Clara, worked as a Financial Analyst for ESL (a subsidiary of TRW), and taught English in Sapporo, Japan, while pursuing martial arts training in Kobayashi-ryu. He subsequently traveled to Eastern and Western Europe, China, South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, Cuba, Mexico, and Central America. Arriving in Homer, Alaska by motorcycle in 1992, he was captured by the beauty of Kachemak Bay. He has since been kept in Homer by the beauty of the people he has found here. Rick has been a KBBI volunteer and DJ since 1995, and a member and former royalty of the Krewe of Gambrinus. He enjoys camping, hiking, skiing, skating and traveling with his wife and two children. He can also be found awash in the culinary community of Homer. |
Patrick millerStewardship Coordinator Patrick Miller comes to us by way of Vermont and Minnesota, where he interned with the Minnesota Land Trust and completed a variety of stewardship tasks and legal research. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy from Bethel University in Minnesota, and recently completed his Juris Doctor and Masters in Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. Patrick is filling a new Stewardship Coordinator position at KHLT where he will assist the Conservation Director in property management and stewardship activities. His interests include disc golf, baseball, and backpacking. |
